On our way back from Africa, we had a 24 hour layover in Cairo. Since John had never been to Cairo, we wanted to make the most of our day, and we sure did! With right about 24 hours in country, we were able to see all the major highlights, which John is calling "our big five."
After an early breakfast at our hotel, we grabbed a taxi (being thankful for being back to a country where we can use our Arabic) and headed for the pyramids & sphinx. We spent some time looking around and taking pictures, then we took a camel ride to get a closer look at the pyramids. During our ride, our guide offered John 200 camels and a pyramid for his wife! When John explained that I wasn't for sale, he said he would make the same offer for one of my sisters. Dad, you interested?
After the pyramids, we went by the Egyptian Museum. We saw all the things from King Tut's tomb, as well as lots of other cool old stuff (feel free to talk to John if you want to know more about this). Then came one of the biggest highlights of the trip! We ate lunch at Chili's! Yes, just like in America. We ordered bottomless chips & salsa, strawberry lemonade and fajitas! Whoohoo! Once we could move(after eating too much), we rolled ourselves out of the restaurant and headed for the Khan Al-Kali which is a huge market. We picked up a beautiful alabaster votive and a carving made from camel bone. We ended our day with a relaxing ride down the Nile in a felucca boat.
We were amazed at everything we were able to do in just one day! We had a blast.
